Update on Footpath and Safety Barrier Improvements

The Long Riston Playing Fields Committee (PFC) would like to provide an update on the recent footpath and barrier works following questions raised by residents.

Why were the new roadside barriers installed?

East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) has installed new roadside barriers to cover the footpath exit currently used by the school. Both the PFC and the School Trust requested this improvement to ensure that all school access points are protected with appropriate safety measures.

Existing K-Type Barrier

It is unclear who originally commissioned or funded the relocation of the previous K-type barrier. Records suggest it may have been moved between 2015 and 2018 to create space for cycle parking.

Concerns Raised by Residents

Parents and carers have expressed concerns that the existing K-type barrier is difficult to navigate, especially for those using buggies or wheelchairs. The uneven surface of the path has also been highlighted as a contributing factor.

Work Commissioned by the PFC

Once ERYC confirmed that the footpath falls under the responsibility of the PFC—rather than the School Trust—we arranged for a contractor to remove the barrier and repair the path surface. This work could only be scheduled once the new roadside barrier was installed to maintain pupil safety during and after the changes.

The total cost of this work is £2,460, reflecting the increased use of this entrance as the school’s main access point rather than the original gates on Main Street.

Funding Support

The project has been funded as follows, with the PFC instrumental in brokering

  • £400 – contribution from the School

  • £400 – contribution from the PTFA

  • £400 – grant application from Withernwick Community Wind Farm Fund

  • £1,260 – covered by existing PFC reserves

Work Progress

  • The roadside barrier installation by ERYC was completed this past weekend.

  • Footpath work by the private contractor was planned to begin this week, but has been delayed due to recent adverse weather conditions. A revised start date will be shared once confirmed.

Thank you to residents, parents, park users and the school community for your patience and understanding while these safety improvements are completed.

And especially to all parties who have helped towards the funding support of this project
